The left side…

It’s not my usual spot, but I found it to be incredibly freeing. A release from responsibility and an absolute sense of lightness. The focus was very different, from keeping my eyes mostly on the road, checking speed and instinctively following deeply ingrained road rules, to looking around and hoping to find safe places to pull over into, looking for spots that would provide the best angle to maximise the shot I was looking for, and just absolutely enjoying the ever-changing scenery around me.

Having complete trust in your driver is key to comfortably moving to the left side, with the added local knowledge of beautiful and breath-taking locations is an absolute blessing and adds to the ingredients of an exhilarating and adventurous road trip into new places you’ve not yet explored.

In eight days we barely scratched the surface of the places we visited. The focus of this trip for me was more of a deeper reconnection opportunity with my gorgeous daughter, that we planned with with many opportunities for exploring and shooting vastly different scenes to those I usually experience in Western Australia.

From plains to glaciers, from cities to mountain vistas, lakes to beaches, to small townships and back to the city, we covered a ton of ground and I shot a ton of photos, with my camera rather than with my drones as have been my usual tools for  shooting in the last couple of years.

Reconnecting with my dslr was therefore also a focus of this trip, mainly because the scenery was so different, and also because the places where I would naturally throw a drone up were often too close to airfields, or in areas where there were more helicopters flying than I could imagine.

Back in WA now, Im keen to see what treasures I’ve got, knowing that many of the subjects of my photos have been shot many times before, just not by me 😉

Im feeling inspired and keen to play in a few new areas this year, photographically speaking at least…. my absolute thanks to Tessa for driving me everywhere, for finding a way to “quick! stop the car!’ at the drop of a hat, for her off-roading skills, and her tolerance of all of the above. Big thanks also to Gertrude the Mitsubishi Outlander for getting us everywhere so easily. See you both again sometime soonish 😉
