Accomodating Jack…
Travels and trips away in Jack are so easy when my accomodation is carried on top, and sometimes I even car camp inside. Apparently car camping is a pretty big thing now!
Before moving to Oz I had camped once as an adult and a couple of times as a kid with Girl Guides.
Now camping is a pretty regular event in my life. It started pretty simply, on the advice of some friends in Brisbane who introduced me to this finer way life as a way of travelling without spending $$ on shoddy bug ridden motels.
My first setup was very basic and has evolved over the last 10 or so years.
I started with the pretty common fold over roof top tent (rtt), and it changed my life. It made travel so much easier in that I could find somewhere safe to park up and set up camp rather than head back home. It wasn’t unusual for me to travel up to 300-600kms on a weekend exploring.
It also made the move from Brisbane to Perth a lot easier and cheaper, driving all the way and not needing to plan ahead as to where to stay.
I felt like I’d hit the big time when I graduated to a rtt with a simpler setup and breakdown process. The cover was easier to take off and put back on, and there was one simple cord to release in order to set up for the night.
The trouble was I’d get completely covered in dirt and dust and dead bugs while taking the cover off and putting it back on again. First world problems right?
Anyway, I looked around and found my dream tent set up, and waited until the perfect opportunity to snaffle it came along.
Its huge. I call it my penthouse apartment because it’s so roomy. It’s really comfy too, and as it has a hard top feels a little more secure and has that added wind resistance on the solid side when set up.
There’s an added bonus in that I can walk all over it when its packed away, so its bit like having more real estate, with an added deck to hang out on, up top of Jack.
Sometimes though, in some weather and on longer trips, I’ve felt like I really need something more…
