A flying visit…

An opportunity came up recently to show another kiwi around a tiny bit of this huge and stunning state of Australia I’m currently living in. It was just a quick trip… covering an odd 1,891km…. in a very quick three days.

As you can imagine Jack was well up to the challenge …so after a very quick dash down the freeway to shoot sunrise at Kings Park, and back home to do the final pack, we were on our way.

Leaving a pretty chilly Perth amid cloudy skies and rainstorms, Shark Bay was our final destination and I was keen to embrace the warmth and sunshine I’ve always experienced up there.

Playing leapfrog with the other travellers on the road, it wasn’t long till we started to see the wildflowers along the roadside that Western Australia is famous for. The stunning pinks of the Pink Lake, vivid greens, brilliant yellows, fluffy whites, shades of blues intermingled with the red dirt along the roadside, the deep reds of the Kalbarri cliffs, and the carpets of colour spreading as far as you can see.

What a beautiful drive! 🤩

The clouds, the rain and the crazy gusty winds that kept my drones tucked safely in their cases, followed us all the way up the coast till the turnoff to Shark Bay.

Welcomed by a seemingly unending carpet of yellow, sprinkled with patches of red dirt, it was an absolute joy to be showing someone through this beautiful state. Jack looked pretty good amongst the flowers too, don’t you think?

As you crest the hill and drop into the town of Denham, you’re greeted with a beautiful peaceful vista of soothing green and blue water, and if you’re really lucky, puffy white clouds.

Its like a soothing balm for the soul…. for me anyway :)

Having a sunset flight booked with Shark Bay Aviation, we headed across the waters to get upfront and personal with this World Heritage Area. With our camera’s snapping, time literally flew and before we knew it we were back on the ground again; huge smiles, hugs for the pilot and a ton of image files to review and process.

Crazy but amazing.

I feel so lucky to have all this just a few hours (ok maybe quite a few hours) up the road from me.

The next day we drove all the way back to Perth. That’s roughly 830km, or around 8 and a half hours…. if you don’t stop for the pretty pictures along the way, like we did. Wildflowers, canola and sunset are a very attractive mix.

It’s always a challenge for me…. do you just drive to get to your destination, or do you make the most of the moments and the scenery... and stop to capture them?

…what do you do?
